During the long and storied history of the DeSoto House Hotel, this corner location has housed a great variety of businesses. Originally a railroad and telegraph office, this site has also seen saloons, salesman’s sample rooms, guest parlors and a news agency.
One of the more unusual historical events occurred in 1869, when a billiard parlor graced this spot. Immediately beneath was a dye making facility, whose steam boiler exploded with a tremendous roar! Fragments penetrated the south wall of the hotel, flew across Green Street, and struck a neighboring grocery store.
In this room, the force of the blast literally lifted the heavy billiard tables into the air - and when gravity took over, their huge legs literally punctured the floor!
No such excitement can be expected today, for the site of the ill-fated dye works is now our kitchen—engaged exclusively in preparing delectable appetizers, salads and sandwiches for the valued patrons of the Green Street Tavern. Enjoy your visit
